A case study of Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State
ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION: An optimum day care centre should not just provide an escape for working class parents but should also be able to meet basic requirements for infectious disease control, have good nutritional practices, proper safety measures and good environmental health services. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and practices of day care providers in Warri South Local Government Area on nutrition, infectious diseases and safety.
METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional study which was carried out among 80 care providers in day care centres. The study instrument was a semi-structured questionnaire.
RESULTS: All respondents were of the age range of 20 to above 50 with modal age range of 30-39(51.3%). Of the respondents 93.8% were females with 46.3% of the respondents having tertiary level of education. Of the respondents 52.5% were Urhobos and 66.3% were married. Amongst respondents, 86.3% had a good score on knowledge of infectious disease, 48.8% had good score on practice on prevention of infectious diseases, while 45% had fair practices. Majority of the respondents 71.3% had good score on safety measures and environmental health status while 56.3% had fair scores on knowledge of nutritional practices with 35% carrying out good proactive measures to prevent the occurrence of infectious disease.
CONCLUSION: This study in general showed good knowledge on infectious disease but less than half of the respondents had good practices on prevention of infectious disease spread. Majority of the respondents had good safety measures and environmental health status. However, they had fair knowledge on nutritional practices and poor proactive measures in preventing the occurrence of infectious diseases.
